Studying abroad will almost certainly be a defining moment in your child's educational experience,a time of growth and exploration..

Before they leave home: Give your child the comfort of your full support, while instilling in them a sense of independence. Your son or daughter's study abroad experience will largely be determined by their mental attitude, so try to help them prepare and encourage them to be ready for the new and unexpected. An open mind is key to any successful travel experience.

While they're abroad: As a parent, it is natural to worry about your children when they are away from home. Although regular contact through email and phone with your child is normal, we also encourage parents to avoid the temptation of getting too involved. Maintaining a certain level of distance will allow your child to meet challenges as an independent individual. The confidence that he or she will gain on this journey will be invaluable for the future. When you do talk to your child, be a patient listener and keep a positive attitude. Often, what they need most from you is encouragement and an understanding ear. Additionally, the Lotus staff is always on call to help with any practical issues that may arise. Please see Health and Safety for more details.

When they return: Spending time in another country inevitably shifts a person's general perspective of. When your child comes home, don't be alarmed if you notice changes in world outlook and even personal style. Give your son or daughter time and space to readjust to life at home, as students who return from a period of time overseas sometimes experience 鈥渞everse-culture shock鈥?. The best thing you can do as a parent is to speak with your child openly and often about their time studying and living abroad. For most students, this is an experience they will never forget.
